Since May 2021 Natuurmonumenten and VVV Schiermonnikoog are based together in information centre Het Baken, the starting point for your visit to Schiermonnikoog.
At Het Baken you can book (nature) excursions, activities, and accommodations. Of course you can also get here general information about the island, about the beautiful flora and fauna of the National Park and about the village with its rich cultural history and its authentic landmarks.
The exposition introduces you to the National Park, the riches of the World Heritage Wadden Sea and the special position of Schiermonnikoog within it.
Look a seal and a spoonbill in their eyes, admire the starry sky over the island, look at its unique plants and animals, and experience all seasons on Schiermonnikoog. Don’t miss the arrival and departure times of several bird species, since Schiermonnikoog is a hotspot for birds and for bird lovers.
In the shop of Het Baken you can find nice nature hunts, attractive wander and cycling routes, up-to-date nature guides and souvenirs.
Het Baken was designed by the Frisian architect Nynke Rixt Jukema from Leeuwarden, in cooperation with Bètha Architects from Burgum. The building has a sustainable design and generates its own energy.
