Nature
National Park Schiermonnikoog is one of the most natural areas in the Netherlands. Wind, water and the tides have formed the island and still have free rein on the beach and the salt marshes.
The National Park is characterized by a lot of different landscapes on a small surface: from the mudflats to the dunes and from the forest to the Westerplas. In every landscape different kinds of animals and plants find a place to live. Through the year more than three hundred species of birds can be spotted on the island. Hundreds of species of plants grow here, amongst which nine species of orchids, and on the beach you can find more than hundred species of shells.
Humans have influenced Schiermonnikoog for centuries. Outside the village and the polder, the landscape is not completely man made, but cultural-historical elements remind us of the past.
